The training of medical specialists in the different countries of the European Union

Since its foundation more than 65 years ago, the UEMS is convinced that the quality of care is directly linked to the quality of training of healthcare professionals. The training of medical specialists in the different countries of the European Union is the responsibility of the National competent authorities of each country, and thus is not within the sphere of competence of the UEMS.

However, in the absence of specific, statutory oversight of medical training across Europe, the aim of the UEMS specialty sections is to assure the highest standards of medical practice through robust, valid, high-level specialty examinations for specialist trainees.

The ESENeph commenced in February 2020 following a successful pilot project over the preceding three years. We deliver the examination in partnership with the UEMS Renal Section and Boards, the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK, the UK Kidney Association and the European Renal Association.

The ESENeph is a high quality examination, which aims to drive standards and promote the harmonisation of nephrology training across the European union. Delivered every 9 months through an online portal, the examination is widely accessible across Europe and beyond.

The questions are in ‘best of five’ multiple-choice format, with an emphasis on assessing practical clinical knowledge. There will be five options with one correct answer and four closely-related distractors acting as plausible alternatives. Whilst there are no eligibility requirements, to improve their chances of successfully completing the examination, candidates are encouraged to attempt the examination later in their training programme.

Since its inception, 217 European candidates have successfully passed the examination. The exam standard is reviewed every three years, and we are pleased to note, following the latest revision, that the European Candidate pass rate has increased to 70.2%. Further details of the ESENeph, including future dates, collaborations, how to apply, examination fees, curricula and blueprints, learning resources for trainees and sample questions are available on the examination website.

As a valuable resource for exam preparation, the European Renal Association (ERA) offers its members access to the Neph-Manual. Presented as an e-book, this manual is specifically designed for young nephrologists to support their training and expand their knowledge of the nephrology specialty. The Manual consists of different chapters covering various aspects of kidney disease and discusses pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment in clearly subdivided blocks, accompanied by graphs and illustrations. Each chapter ends with several ‘test yourself’ and multiple-choice questions.
